In front of the restaurant and café, a new public space is created as a main gathering spot and address for the university in the historic city.
This central space organises the walkways of hundreds of students, professors, employees, Ghentians and casual passers-by. In this sense, it functions as a connective hub between ‘De Brug’ and its immediate neighbours: the ‘Technicum’ building and the ‘Universiteitsforum’ (UFO). This threefold servitude makes for the (literal) baselines of the project: in the orthogonal interplay of lines on the square, the rhythm of the Technicum’s façade is interwoven with the dimensions of the concrete panels of the new student restaurant extension.
site plan
Two
tree circles with an ecological and educational purpose break the initial
hegemonic orthogonality. Finally, a tall flagpole is planted on the streetside
of the square. It marks its presence, making it a new beacon for the city.
