Lourdeshoek, in collaboration with URA and VK architects & engineers, 2023

In the North of Ghent, amid an amalgam of urban figures – large industrial buildings and warehouses, small terraced houses, long infrastructures – lies the logistics site ‘Lourdeshoek’. A new intervention should create clarity.

Since an intrinsic clarity is not an evidence, we proceeded in a thorough analysis of the site and a schematic translation of the assignment. The proposed programme – composed by the sum of a logistics zone, an office function and a warehouse with workshops – is converted into a well-defined ensemble of three quasi-autonomous volumes.

A low volume houses a logistics zone with a public courtyard; a medium-height volume stacks the warehouse above it. A tall and wide but slender volume encompasses the office spaces. Materiality, spaciousness and aesthetics are tailored to the specific function and thus vary per volume. However, generosity, legibility, comfort, space and light are constants throughout. Due to the specific composition, the constellation also provides sufficient green space all around.
