Europark, 2022 - ongoing

Europark contains the ambitious renovation and extension of two large building slabs on Antwerp’s Linkeroever. Since the main ambition of the client is to preserve as many units as possible, the project strives for maximal spatial efficiency. This results in a total sum of 365 social apartments, composed of a mix of one-, two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments. By thickening the slabs by 30%, we ensure the same amount of apartments, but also succeed in making them sufficiently spacious.

The large scale of the project is tackled by starting from the smaller scale of the resident. Step-by-step the architecture works its way up towards the total renovation of the building blocks – and their possibility of providing a provisional blueprint for the overall renewal of the neighbourhood they are part of.

Sufficient daylight, visibility and spatial quality is quintessential for each living unit. The boundary between inside and outside is maximally eliminated in each apartment – as is also the case on the ground floor.

The collective entrances take shape as generous spaces. An artist intervention further marks their presence on the ground floor.
Simultaneously, it also aims to raise the esteem of and respect for the buildings within their social context.

A technical cornice and refined facade materiality provide the blocks with a renewed generosity:
proudly they relate to the neighbourhood. In this way, Europark regains its faded identity.
